Gambling Act 2005

The primary statute governing commercial gambling in Great Britain — it created the Gambling Commission and the modern licensing regime.

In detail

The Act came fully into force on 1 September 2007 and set three licensing objectives that still drive policy: preventing gambling from being a source of crime, ensuring it is conducted fairly and openly, and protecting children and other vulnerable people. The April 2023 White Paper began a phased reform programme implemented through 2024-2026, including online slot stake limits, the statutory RET levy, mixed-product bonus restrictions and the 10x wagering cap.
